What is Chiropractic?

What's the first thing you think of when someone mentions the fact that they have been to see a Chiropractor? They must have a bad back? Or neck? Or maybe they are having headaches? Or maybe you have heard from a parent that they took there 6 week old baby who had colic?

Chiropractors adjust misalignments primarily in the spine. So when they do an adjustment what affect is it having on the body.

Our body is constantly sending and receiving messages, up and down via nerve impulses up to and from the brain. These messages go via the spine. Put simply the body perceives something, it might be a smell, a sight or a painful stimuli, and nerve impulses take that via the nervous tissue to the brain for interpretation, via the spine.

This is a diagram of the nerve pathways travelling up and down the spinal cord.

A reflex, such as the knee-jerk reflex when the patela is hit, does not travel up the spine to the brain, but goes as far as the level of the spine, and reflexes back. This is why you pull your hand away from something hot before the brain has registered the heat involved. It is a reflex. Again we see the spine involved, but only at one bone level, or vertebra.

And what covers the spinal cord? The spinal column!
So maybe you are beginning to see the effect that Chiropractic may have on all sorts of processes within the body, if it inolves a message going up or down the spinal cord? And that covers most things!

There have been many studies to show the effects of Chiropractic on performance, testing reaction time, vertical power jump and numerous other bodily functions.

So next time someone tells you that they have just seen their Chiropractor and they say that they always feel so well after being adjusted, you can tell them about the affect that adjustments have on their spinal cord and brain, the Motorway and "Central Control" of nerve tissue.

Ask yourself this question. Is your "Nerve Highway" a straight and wide, free from kinks and bends, or is it a country road, with twists and turns every way you go? Do yourself a favour and give your local McTimoney Chiropractor a call.

Health and Exercise

I regularly find myself giving the advice "I think it would be beneficial if you increased the amount of exercise that you do!" Unfortuantely I have not been taking my own advice for several years now, so yesterday 1st October, the "International Day of the Older Person" I decided to do something about that, and went along for my first Pilates class with Deborah  Higgins. I went along to one of her classes in Prestwick, as I had done Pilates before, but would recommend that you have a one-to-one with her before joining in a class.

Why do I recommend Pilates? Well, my work as a McTimoney Chiropractor is all about aligning the spine, so that you can be the healthiest individual that you can be, as the "nerve highway", the spinal cord, is cleared of any blockages, traps or impingements that having a misaligned spine can bring, this results in the body becoming ill at ease with itself, or dis-ease. For the body to remain in alignment, the muscles need to be toned, especially in the region that we refer to as the "core". Core stabilty is important, and this is where Pilates comes in. But are there any other benefits to exercise?

A study published in the Lancet, (the peer reviewed publication of the medical profession) showed that just 15 minutes exercise a day had significant health benefits, and that it added 3 years to the average life. Researchers have studied the changes that occur in the body at the chemical level when you exercise, and noted that many metabolites change when you exercise. These changes alter the blood sugar level, helping to maintain a healthy weight and prevent  heart disease and diabetes, it can also lower oestrogen levels which has an effect on breast cancer. The MacMillan Cancer Support suggests that moderate exercise for two and a half hours a week,be part of the treatment plan for those diagnosed with cancer, but always one to preach prevention is better than cure (or at least it is better than the treament offered by the health care systems of today) I suggest you don't wait until you have the diagnosis, GET OUT THERE AND EXERCISE NOW!

So this morning "how do i feel?" Well a bit stiff and achy as I might have expected, but also positive about the step that I have taken to ward off the common complaints of being an Older Person (not that I consider to be one yet, but it is a label that has been applied to people of my age) "Wear and Tear consistent with age" is a common diagnosis that my clients have been given by the medical profession. I love it, because it means that I can truly demonstate the abilty of the McTimoney method of Chiropractic in returning them to better health!

If reading this has made you think that you would like to get out there and exercise more, then please discuss any health issues with the person that is providing the class. As you can see from the research that is being done, having a diagnosis of any kind should not be a reason not to exercise, but do so within your own limits. We should all take the responsibilty for our own health, get to know what our bodies can and cannot do, but you may be in for a surprise that yours can do more than you thought given some daily exercise.

As for me,I look forward to a long and happy working association with Deborah J Higgins Pilates. I shall be there again next Monday morning, and I am happy to say that there were no "Tena moments", (for me at least, I cannot speak for Deborah!: ))

Dyspraxia and McTimoney Chiropractic

This week, 24th-30th Sept is Dyspraxia Awareness Week. Dyspraxia in children is often characterized by a complex set of symptoms, often with an impairment of the organization of movement and mobility.
Dyspraxia can also overlap with other conditions such as dyslexia due to the implications it has for skills such as reading and writing. Dyspraxic children often exhibit late development in motor skills such as sitting, standing and walking then later difficulties in running, jumping or catching a ball. These are also the symptoms that a child who has a misaligned spine may present in my clinic with.

If we then look at the nerve supply of the human body, it is easy to see how McTimoney Chiropractic might help people that suffer with dyspraxia. By removing the impingement on the nervous tissue, it allows the body to express itself healthily and function normally again. If you feel that your child, or someone you know can be helped, then please feel free to pass on my details. I work in Ayr, on the South West coast of Scotland. If you would like more information on Dyspraxia click here.

Risk of Heart Attack and Common Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

A study of 99,000 people (that’s a huge study) in Denmark has found that taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, NSAIDs, that’s ibuprofen, neurofen, voltarol amongst others, after you have had an heart attack increases your risk of dying from further heart problems, including having another heart attack! Even if you take them years after the original heart attack! GPs are being warned about this, but what if you don’t go to your GP for aches and pains but you go to the local chemist or even worse, the supermarket where there is no-one asking questions about your health, and whether they are in fact safe for you to take.

                 CAN     =

The risks of Chiropractic treatment are extremely rare, compared to side effects of NSAID’s.

To my knowledge there

"IS ABSOLUTELY NO RISK OF HAVING A HEART ATTACK AFTER A McTIMONEY CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT!"

I would say around 99% of the people that come to see me for aches and pains have taken some form of NSAID or other, before resorting to come and seeking the help of a McTimoney Chiropractor. After the GP we are probably the next health professional that someone suffering with muscular aches and pains will seek treatment from. Chiropractic is a safe drugless form of treatment for many symptoms that you will reach to the medicine cabinet and take an NSAID for. Are you willing to take that risk?

How Safe is Your Child's Playroom?

As a McTimoney Chiropractor who sees Chiropractic care as a way of maximising your child's health, I am always on the lookout for worthy items that help me to provide "health tips" to the parents of these children.

It is widely known that a chemical known as "phtalates" can have health risks, and have been removed from bottles used for formula feeding as well as toys. Phtalates are used in a wide range of products, their aim is to make plastic more bendy. It is found widely in products used in hospitals from the bags that contain IV fluids to the tubing that it is given through, it is found it all manner of food coverings in your local supermarket.

However, Swedish researchers have found that just changing the type of bottle or examining the toys that your developing child plays with, is not enough if you have vinyl flooring that your child crawls across whilst playing and exploring his or her world. These toxic chemicals are then ingested as they pick them up whilst crawling over the flooring, then place them in their mouths.

Children with vinyl flooring in their bedroom have phtalates urinary levels 5 times greater than those with more conventional flooring and are more likley to develop a range of symptoms. They have been linked to a wide range of developmental and reproductive effects. For more information on this go to Dr Mercola

So what advice can I give to the parents of the babies and children that come and see me for McTimoney treatment.

Whenever possible breastfeed your baby. 2 month old babies who have been exclsively breastfed have lower levels than those babies who were formula fed as chemicals can leach from the packaging.

Give your developing child toys made from natural materials such as wood. Different textures gives them a more varied experience and develops their sense of touch.

Store food in glass rather than plastic, and do not use food wrap.

Avoid processed food and food that comes wrapped in plastic.

Finally do your child's nervous system a favour, and get them checked regularly by a McTimoney Chiropractor.

Freedom for Birth

Ligaments of the female pelvis
Today is the day that the global screening of Freedom for Birth, which I will be going to see tonight, courtesy of Sharon Trotter of TIPS Ltd. So what has this got to do with Chiropractic. Well my passion is seeing pregnant women through their pregnancy. If you look at the picture of the female pelvis, you can see that there are some pretty big ligaments, especially around the back of the pelvis, in the sacrum. These ligaments allow the pelvis to increase its size, to allow the baby through. This area is called the Rhomboid of Michaelis (Sutton) If, for what ever reason, the pregant lady has had a previous fall, especially if she landed on her derriere, then this can put the pelvis out of alignment. What tends to then happen is she expereinces pain as these ligaments stretch with an abnormal tension across them. Pain is frequently felt in the front across the symphysis pubis McTimoney Chiropractic aims to realign the pelvis prior to birth so that the pelvis has the maximum ability to "give" for the baby to pass through.

Keep a lookout for the updates from the Freedom of Birth Film coming later today

Painkillers cause Headaches

You may have read the news today saying that taking painkillers too often can actually “give you a headache”, according the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.  As a McTimoney Chiropractor this is not news to me, I have known this for a very long time, and it is worse if the painkillers you take have codeine in them, such as Co-codamol or DF118, or codeine phosphate. This is because codeine is an opiate, and therefore highly addictive, and so you get withdrawal symptoms very quickly.

So what are the alternatives? Well as a McTimoney Chiropractor I see many people in my clinic on a daily basis who are experiencing headaches of a various nature. Here is the story of one such lady.

Sally had been having headaches all of her life. Even at school at the age of 8, Sally remembers having headaches. By the time sally got into my clinic, she had had all the treatments and therapies that her GP had to offer, from the regular painkillers to anti-depressants and beta-blockers, and was due to retire the next year. Her headaches and migraines were controlling her life, if she woke up in the morning with a headache, she would stay in bed, because she knew that no amount of medication would be able to touch it.

When she came into me, we went through a complete medical history, including accidents that she had had. At the age of 7, Sally had fallen off a swing in the park! Any connections yet? You bet, falling off the swing Sally had knocked her neck out of alignment, giving rise to what we Chiropractors call “cervico-genic headaches”. Had her mother taken her to a McTimoney Chiropractor back then, Sally, and her family, would have been spared the years of misery that followed.

NICE says  that there is no proven treatment other than acupuncture. I know that the scientists out there would say that this story is not a randomised controlled trial (RCT) and I would tend to agree with them, but are you suffering from headaches and want to try something else, what do you have to lose, other than your life back? If not you, then maybe somebody you know and love. Do them a favour and pass this on to them.

Where Healthcare REALLY means Healthcare, and NOT sickness care

As a McTimoney Chirorpactor, I am practicing in a profession that has long held the belief that we do not  require drugs to remain healthy. Chiropractic prides itself on being a "drugless treatment" for optimum health. Chiropractors actively encourage the people that come to see them for treatment, to look at their lifestyles, not "pop pills". "We are what we eat" is truly true!

So I am always on the look out for articles that educate us about what is really happening out there, not just the view that any government wants us to have. I believe that before making any choices with regard to our health, we should be presented with both sides of the coin, and be allowed to make up our own minds about whether or not to receive that procedure. From "Augmentation to Vaccination and WXYZ!" That is why I get daily newsletters from Dr Mercola. He scrutinises literature and publishes it in his newsletters, giving me all the background into things that our Doctors would have us take without question. Much of his comments apply to the US but he also talks about things happening around the world. If you would like to read them too, then check out my blog as I will be posting about his newsletter on a regular basis.

So if you, or someone you know is about to go into hospital for some procedure or other, check out what Dr Mercola has to say about going into hospital, and how to stop yourself becoming a statistic.

Spring Sunshine

For most of us in the UK this week, we have been enjoying spring sunshine. It does your heart and soul good to see it doesn't it? The colours in the garden are wonderful! Blossom's on the trees and daffodils and tulips giving the garden colour. It has made me a bit remiss on the Blog front, but I hope that you will forgive me, my loyal followers!
I have been reading (in the garden) about how important it is to look after your Soul. Many years ago, when you went to the GP he or she would enquire about your wellbeing. They would often live in the community they served and so knew what was going on in people's lives, through the community. Now you are lucky if you can see the same doctor twice, let alone have them know what is going on in your community, because the chances are they don't live in it!

Time and time again, people come to see me as a McTimoney Chiropractor, and are amazed at how detailed the history taking is. I take the time to ask them all the questions that are important to get a complete picture of what is going on in their lives. And those questions don't stop after the initial assessment.

Do they enjoy their job? Is your boss a good one? How are the children getting on at school? Are they planning their holidays? How do they feel about having to reapply for their own job? How are the plans going for their retirement? How is retirement? These are the types of questions that they might be asked at follow ups. When I moved up to Scotland, after working in the same place for 10 years, I realised how much a part of people's lives that I had become. I had listened to their ups and downs for the past 10 years! I had been blessed and privileged to be a part of their lives. I had listened to what was important in their lives. That is listening to the Soul.

Bernie Siegel says that people do well in their healing when they feel that they are in control of their treatment, whatever their health concern is. As a McTimoney Chiropractor I also believe that you, as my patient, are in control of your lives. I will give advice, but ultimately you are responsible for your own health, not me, not your Doctor, not any therapist of any description, but YOU! Many sports and activities are not good for the alignment of the spine, but they are what the Soul needs, so as your McTimoney Chiropractor, I am here to make sure that you are aligned so that your Soul can continue with what makes it happy, and that includes kneeling by your bed to say your prayers!(And being able to get up off your knees again)

Interestingly enough, I have had people come back and say that they feel closer to God after treatment, that they have been able to "connect" with God. It is no surprise to me that the phrase "align me with Your Will" is used. I align them physically so that they are then aligned Spiritually.

The sun has been absent for much of today, but I now see that it is coming out to bless the SW of Scotland for the evening, so I am going to find out how much of the garden my lovely husband has cleared for me today, so that I can sit by the byrne (brook/small river) with my pastels and sketch pad. have a Blessed Weekend!

Chiropractic and Gun Crime

What a strange title you may say. What has Chiropractic got to do with gun crime? On first thougths you may think none whatsoever, but let us look a little deeper into it.
A few short days ago, I was reading articles about the teenagers in the USA who go into the community and start shooting! One was entitled "He murdered a friend after taking this drug!" courtesy of Dr Mercola. We hear these stories in the News now, and we almost switch off to them, they are becoming so common. The article that I was reading linked these teenagers by the medications that they had been taking. They had ALL, either been on anti-depressants or were coming off them. So is this increase of teenagers opening fire due to depression or the anti-depressants that they are taking?
Then I got to thining about someone that I have treated Chiropractically. He was seriously depressed. Now I am NOT saying that he came to see me to treat his depression, he sought treatment because he was in pain. However because his pain was dealt with, his depression went too!
After several weeeks of treatment, when he was feeling better, I asked him how his depression had had an effect on his family life. He said "my children would watch me come down the stairs and say to each other 'he's in a bad mood, let's get out of here' and they would go out! Our family life was nil! I didn't want to go out and play football with my young son, nor take my wife shopping, in fact I would give her money to go out so I could be left in peace!" Now the only thing that depresses me is the fact that I took so long to see a McTimoney Chiropractor and get my life back!
Today I saw the News, this time of a shooting in Tolouse, France, 4 killed including 2 children. I wonder if the gun-man was taking an anti-depressant? We will probably never hear, but my heart goes out to all those peolpe who have suffered because their loved one was prescribed medication rather than seek Chiropractic treatment for the root cause!

When does the Soul Enter the Human Body?

This is a question that I have been asking myself over the past few weeks. So it was one reason why I wanted to listen to Thomas Moore, to see if he could shed any light on it. I don't have the answer, so if you have started reading this, hoping to get one, Sorry!
My conversations, mainly with my husband over these past weeks, we have debated whether the Soul is there at conception? Does it enter the body at birth? Does it enter at some other time? Who knows, that is part of the Wonder and Miracle that is Human Life!

So what do you think?

Work on my Soul Part 1

Every once in a while, you meet someone who shifts your outlook on the cosmos. Well in the past 24 hours I have met not 1, not 2, but many people who have had an influence on me, in ways that they may never know. Over the past few years, I have been following the works and lessons of Carolyn Myss and the work that she did on Teresa of Avila. Primarily "Entering the Castle" It is work on developing the Soul, and though it has been painful at times, it has paid dividends.
Yesterday I attended a talk given by Thomas Moore. Now I have to admit that I have not read any of his works, but intend to get hold of a copy of "Care of the Soul" and possibly more intriguing is the book entitled "Care of the Soul in Medicine". Listening to Thomas speak, I realised that what was missing in my working life as a nurse, was that freedom to look after people's Souls, once they entered hospital.
I recall one patient who was desperately ill, who was only 35 with a young family. He was petrified that if he fell asleep during the night he might die, and nobody would know because it was dark, so he kept himself awake all night, and I often found myself talking to him about his work as a blacksmith, and his wife and daughter, a longed for child who was conceived after years of marriage. And now here he was desperately ill and the doctors could not give him any reassurance that he would live to see his daughter start school, graduate, marry and all the other things we take for granted that we will watch our children do.
When I was back on day shift, I used to ask the cleaners to go around his room quietly as he was sleeping, only to hear "he should sleep during the night like everybody else!" How could I get across to them that he was frightened in case he died and nobody discovered him until it was too late. it finally came to a head when my "colleagues" reported me to the Ward Sister for not doing any work, because I was talking to him all night!!!
I was already training to be a McTimoney Chiropractor at this stage, with a massage and aromatherapy qualification under my belt, so I handed in my notice shortly after this.
When people now come to me, (often with bad backs, but not always), I have the time to listen to their life stories. How not being able to work because of their bad back has on their mental health, how they worry about the bills that keep coming in, how they cannot play with their children as they would like to, how they cannot go hill-walking as they would like. Gradually over the weeks of treatment, I hear how they are back at work, back playing football with the boys, and hill-walking again.I have such a privileged position as a McTimoney Chiropractor, each day brings me such joy.

Spring is in the Air

As the light evening's start to waken us from our Winter slumber, we start to become more active. How many of you have been out on your bikes in the past few weeks? Or felt a little less sleepy, and have got more "get up and go!"
Have any of you tried to be a little more active, and found that your body just doesn't want to work quite as well as you might like it too.
Here's what "Charlie the Chiropractor" has to say about it.

Keepwell in Spring

Spring has arrived in Hedghog Row
But everyone is moving terribly slow
Alex tells Fufu that through hibernation
Charlie says sleeping can cause sub...lux....ation
Because when we stay in one place too long
The spine and it's cord can sometimes go wrong
So we go to see Charlie, he knows what to do
His hands will know it's your first visit too
They will work all the way down the 24 bones
Helping your body to work on its own
When you've been a few times, just wait and see
You'll be as strong and as happy as me.

So if you have been a couch potato all winter and now would like to enjoy the Spring sunshine and get out in the fresh air, but feel that your body is not working as well as it should, then give me a call. It is never too late!

Subluxation = misalignment

Soooooo long

So what has been going on in the McTimoney Chiropractic world in South Ayrshire? Well first of all I have been extremely busy, helping the people of Ayr maximize their optimum health. I have had some incredible results with little people, who to be honest have been let down by the NHS. I cannot say too much for confidentiality reasons, but all I can say is, if your child has been born prematurely and then diagnosed with anything, then please take him or her along to a McTimoney Chiropractor and see if they can help. The premature spine is not developed enough to take the full force of contractions, and so it gets bent like a twig. The baby might gget away with it, depending on how they are lying in the womb firstly, and secondly how long the woman labours before she seeks help. The NHS does not appear to understand this, and a "wait and see" stance is taken. If I get permission to tell the story of these littel people who have been helped to stand and walk after just 10 treatments, then I will fill you in.
Have a good weekend, and be blessed.
